Bologna Italy: Why you don’t need a map to explore this city

 

Bologna Italy: One of the few cities in Europe where you don’t really need a map to find the best sights! Come explore with me.

 

After a slight schedule change, I suddenly have a couple of hours to spend in Bologna (in the Emilia-Romagna Region). For a second I am a bit worried as I’m unprepared for a visit. I have no map and no idea of things to do in Bologna. I don’t even know how to get there from the airport!

 

Things to do in Bologna Italy

Being a total type A, I quickly turn to my trusted travel friend Mr. Google and click on a couple of links that catch my eye. The Independent helps me out with my bus problem and assures me there is an easy connection, as well as giving me some quick tips on how to get my bearings.

Bologna Welcome, the official Tourism Website gives me their advice on what to do in Bologna with only 3 hours, including a handy map. I quickly draw up the following brilliant (as I can say so myself) map and feel I’m calming down already.

 

 

Ditching the Map

Then I see a familiar face between the search results. It’s my friend Kash from the Budget Traveler, who gives me the best advice I could get: “Turn left. Turn right? Ditch the map in Bologna. Like any classic Italian city, the whole joy of a visit to Bologna is getting lost and losing track of time and space.” Thanks so much Kash, just what I need to hear.

 

 

 

 

 

Exploring Bologna on Foot

So there I went, into the bus (just outside the terminal on the right) and into the city center. Approaching the massive city gate and seeing the warm red and orange buildings, my heart lit up. My faith in my adventurous skills had returned: I know I’m gonna like it here! 

 

 

It’s not often that I like a new place right away, but Bologna has a charm that you just cannot resist. From the bus / train station, I just walked straight ahead and right away couldn’t stop looking up and turning into pretty looking side alleys. Kash was right, no map needed at all!

Bologna Italië: Een van de weinige steden in Europa waar je niet echt een kaart nodig hebt om de beste attracties te vinden! Kom je met me mee op ontdekkingstocht?

 

Vanwege een kleine verandering in mijn reisschema, heb ik plots een paar uur in Bologna Italië (in de Emilia-Romagna Regio) te besteden. Heel even raakt ik een klein beetje in paniek, omdat ik totaal onvoorbereid ben op een bezoek. Ik heb geen kaart en geen idee van wat ik in Bologna kan gaan doen. Ik weet niet eens hoe ik er vanaf het vliegveld moet komen!

Omdat ik een echte control-freak ben, ga ik gelijk naar mijn goede vriend Meneer Google en klik ik op een paar links die mijn aandacht trekken. The Independent helpt me met mijn bus probleem en verzekert me dat er een gemakkelijke verbinding met de stad is. Daarnaast krijg ik een aantal snelle tips om mijn weg te vinden. 

 

Een kaart van Bologna tekenen

Bologna Welcome, de officiële Toerisme Website geeft me advies over wat ik in Bologna kan doen met slechts 3 uur, inclusief een handige kaart. Ik teken snel de volgende briljante (vind ik zelf) kaart en voel mezelf al wat rustiger worden.

 

 

Weg met die Kaart!

Dan zie ik een bekend gezicht tussen de zoekresultaten. Het is mijn vriend Kash van de Budget Traveler, die me het beste advies geeft dat ik kan krijgen: “Turn left. Turn right? Bologna lopend verkennen

Dus daar ging ik, in de bus (gelijk buiten de terminal aan de rechterkant) en de stad in. Bij het benaderen van de enorme stadspoort en na het zien van de warme rode en oranje gebouwen, maakte mijn hart een klein sprongetje. Mijn vertrouwen in mijn avontuurlijk talent was weer terug: Ik weet zeker dat ik het hier leuk ga vinden!

 

 

Het is niet vaak dat ik een nieuwe plaats gelijk leuk vind, maar Bologna heeft een natuurlijke charme die je gewoon niet kan weerstaan. Vanaf het bus / treinstation liep ik gewoon rechtdoor en kon gelijk al niet meer stoppen met het omhoog kijken en in de beeldige zijstraatjes lopen. Kash had gelijk, je hebt hier echt geen kaart nodig!
