Malta has been occupied by many different civilizations, so it is no surprise that the local food Malta and Gozo is rich are a blend of Mediterranean flavours.
The traditional Maltese food is based on the seasons and simple, but delicious. Some of the favourites are: Braġioli (beef olives), Kapunata (Maltese ratatouille), Lampuki Pie (fish pie), stews, soups and lots of bread and sheep or goat’s cheese.

Pastizzi
If it’s written on my plane, it must be a great Maltese dish, I thought, and it was. the Pastizzi is a flaky savoury pastry parcel filled with ricotta or mushy peas. You can buy it pretty much anywhere between 30-60 cents per piece and they are quite enjoyable.
At the Fontanella restaurant in Mdina, you can enjoy your pastizzi with a view.
Ftira
This is Malta’s local bread and is usually served with a dabbing of oil, tomato paste and a filling of tuna fish salad. I’ve ordered it twice and it always came with salty potato chips (crisps). I paid around 4-5 Euro.
Salads
A typical Maltese salad comes with aubergine, ham, sausage, olives, capers, (sun dried) tomato, salad and (deep-fried, see second image below) sheep or goat’s cheese. So yummy with the hot weather!
Following the sald, I had Qargħa Bagħli Mimli (Stuffed courgette) for lunch…
… and I had this view:
Imqaret
Imqaret is a traditional Maltese sweet made with pastry and a filling of dates (deep fried). You can find this dish in most street markets and as desert in a restaurant (sometimes served with ice cream). While we were enjoying the imqaret with a couple of people, I think I ate almost the whole plate, my apologies :)
Modern Cuisines
There are many restaurants on Gozo and Malta that also serve a mix of cuisines. We had dinner at Patrick’s, for example, a hip and high standard restaurant in Victoria (Rabat) on Gozo. I really enjoyed the interior of the restaurant and the food was amazing, so I can definitely recommend it!
Lunette pasta filled with ricotta and black truffle, tossed in parsley butter pea & pistachio pure with a truffle oil drizzle
Creme brulee flavoured with fresh madagascar vanilla bean, caramelised with brown muscovado sugar
Goat/Sheep cheese Ravioli
Although Malta is very close to Italy, they don’t really eat a lot of pasta, but I’ve spotted the ravioli with goat or sheep cheese at several restaurants. And I ordered it quite a few times, as it was just too good!
Ravioli at one of the restaurants on the square close to the Ggantija Temples on Gozo.
The Tatita’s Restaurant in St. Lawrenz, Gozo has a great atmosphere and delicious local food. Try the ravioli filled with goat’s cheese! Sorry I don’t have a nice picture of the food… I was that person this time arriving without my memory card in my camera… yeah.
Qassata
Spinach and Pea Qassata with salted tuna, anchovies and herbs. I bought this in the harbour at the ferry and it was alright, but I suppose ordering it from a local bakery, it would taste even better!!
